LABORATORY QUALITY GLOSSARY
SLMTA

Definition
SLMTA stands for Strengthening Laboratory Management Toward Accreditation. It is a training and improvement approach that develops practical laboratory management skills through structured learning and workplace improvement activities. Participating teams apply management tools to issues such as workflow, inventory, equipment, quality control, documents, and service performance. The details of delivery depend on the programme and local implementation arrangements.
SLMTA is not an accreditation body and participation does not confer accreditation. Its value lies in applying learning to real operational problems and maintaining the improvements after a training cycle ends. Laboratory leadership should provide time, authority, and resources for project work, while ensuring that project measures reflect meaningful service outcomes. Staff involvement and follow-up help turn individual learning into durable changes across the laboratory.
Why it matters for accreditation
For accreditation preparation, SLMTA activities can support better management practices and useful evidence of improvement. Keep training participation distinct from demonstrated competence for particular technical tasks. Review whether projects remain effective, connect their outcomes to the laboratory's quality objectives, and use independent assessment to determine readiness rather than treating completion of training as proof of conformity.
