Purpose

A quality manual provides a top-level description of the laboratory and the way its management system is organised. It helps staff and external readers understand the service, its leadership and the relationship between policies, procedures and supporting records. Where a laboratory chooses to maintain a manual, it should act as a useful guide rather than reproduce every operational instruction in a single document.

A good version describes the laboratory's activities, locations and service boundaries, then explains its quality policy, objectives and organisational responsibilities. Authority should be clear for technical decisions, management system coordination and the allocation of resources. A concise overview can show how processes connect across the patient pathway and how the laboratory monitors performance and addresses problems.

The document hierarchy should direct readers to current controlled procedures without creating competing versions of detailed requirements. Include arrangements for reviewing the manual when services, responsibilities or governance change. Quality objectives need a meaningful link to the laboratory's priorities and monitoring arrangements. Avoid presenting the manual as proof of conformity on its own: its value comes from accurately describing an operating system supported by records, competent people and effective review.
